The Most Menswear-y Music Video of 2021 Is Here
Yesterday afternoon, Portland native Aminé debuted the music video for “Charmander”, his first single since releasing the deluxe edition of his 2020 album Limbo. Set in a picturesque, wood-paneled house decorated with a litany of flex-worthy interior flourishes (Michael Ducaroy’s Togo sofa makes a cameo), the video follows the musician as he explores the outdoors and amuses himself by cooking and playing chess at home.
Sound familiar? As a quaint summation of the lockdown experience (“I've been livin' on an island too,” goes the chorus), the video is pretty accurate. But that’s not all it is. Styled by Jordan Page, the digital archivist behind the zeitgeist-y Instagram moodboard Very Advanced, it plays like a montage of current menswear touchstones littered with dozens of Easter eggs—a fuzzy cardigan from Aimé Leon Dore here, a splashy Arc’teryx jacket there—engineered to get the extremely online set buzzing.
Pleated shorts from Issey Miyake! A duo of cozy knits from Bode! Enough funky headwear to make even the staunchest dad cap devotee opt for a crochet bucket hat! When it comes to identifying the minutiae of post-quarantine fashion, Page captured the stylistic hodgepodge with startling specificity, down to the gorp-leaning finishing touches and uber-practical footwear.
Which means the video is also a welcome reminder to dress like you have somewhere else to go this fall—or at least, like, throw on an electric pink Jacquemus polo every now and then—even if you have zero plans to make it off the couch. To help you adorn yourself with a touch of Aminé’s verve, we rounded up (almost) everything the musician’s wearing in “Charmander”, a visual panoply that should be all the incentive you need to really start dressin’ again.
