1. Lynette Boakye Yiadom's “A Passion Like No Other,” as seen in Yiadom's Tate Britain exhibition Fly in League With the Night
It’s cool seeing black bodies presented in art doing regular suburban activities. They’re not fragile, but gentle subjects. Not weak—they’re strong, which I deeply admire.
2. Arthur Jafa, Akingdoncomethas
All my favorite parts about church strung together. I love how Jafa’s successive images work together. He tells a story without using words. He’s the first artist I saw that did it and I finally understood what that meant.
3. A Killing of Two Lovers, directed by Robert Machoian
A simple but great movie that I feel like not many people watched. I found myself immersed in the story—it felt real.
4. Shane Gillis, Beautiful Dogs
I’ve watched this four or five times already—lots of replay value. It’s just pure funny—I like the way his brain works. Smart ideas said in a funny way.
5. The Virgin Suicides, directed by Sofia Coppola
This hit close to home. A family of over-sheltered children that were suffocating with love. The idea you can love something or someone so much that without balance, it can hurt.
