From old-school suiting to Bottega bags, Jacob Elordi has fun with his menswear. But the Australian actor also skews classic: for every madcap leopard-print fleece he entertains, he'll always swing back to the ol' blue jeans and white T-shirt combo. (Get you a man who does both, and all that.) But also get you a piece that does both—and the only thing that can do that is a real big coat during this dawn of Big Coat Season.
Last week, when he was spotted outside the Today show in New York City, Elordi amped up the classic stuff with a huge black overcoat that 1) will go with absolutely everything, and 2) would upgrade any menswear combination imaginable. For Elordi, that meant a pair of oversized aviators, blue jeans, espresso-toned derbies, and a slightly dog-eared copy of W. H. Auden's Selected Poems, which feels quite Saltburn coded—as in, his upcoming homoerotic, old-money drama-comedy thriller opposite Barry Keoghan. But, as always, it was the coat that had menswear heads nodding in approval.
The woolen piece, which he strategically layered on top of a chunky knit jumper, features a single-breasted design with a chunky button setup. It's impactful but easy, and has all the compulsory villain swish you'd expect from a mega overcoat. (And given how it hangs perfectly on Elordi's 6'4" frame, you know that's a biiiiiig Big Coat.)
Elordi is a demonstrated fan of the oversized aesthetic. Throwing back to the height of summer, the actor was spotted rocking a baggy polo shirt with accordingly baggy denim (alongside a shockingly tiny shoulder bag). It's comfy. It's cozy. But more importantly, it's cool.
So if there's anything to be gleaned from this minute but important episode in menswear, it's that one should never underestimate the power of an overcoat. It makes you feel broader, taller and grander. All of that make Big Coat Season the most wonderful time of the year—and all of that makes Jacob Elordi our new Big Coat king.
