No two betrothed starlets gave us more style-blogging fodder in 2023 than Justin and Hailey Bieber, whose combined sartorial prowess produced some of the year’s most memorable, often sexy, and reliably bizarre ensembles. There were the date nights when Justin wrapped himself in a crochet blanket (in contrast to Hailey’s Koosh-ball-esque knit beanie), and there were the date nights when they managed to make argyle trousers and Dickies overalls look sexy. There were his-and-hers baggy jeans, and leather jackets served two ways. And of course, there was the time that Justin tagged along to support Hailey’s latest brand venture at a Krispy Kreme in Times Square, when their clashing outfits—her red-hot mini dress and his gray sweat shorts with yellow Crocs—launched a thousand Halloween costumes.
After another year as Hollywood’s reigning gigantic suit BF and tasteful gown GF, the Biebers have pretty much nailed their respective personal style practices. They executed them again this week during a casual outing in Los Angeles.
Justin’s base here was a simple white tee, characteristically baggy jeans, and a nondescript trucker hat, which he elevated with a few of his signature curios. Around his neck were the diamond-covered mushroom pendants Hailey recently gifted him for their five-year wedding anniversary. On his feet were yet another pair of mysterious basketball-style sneakers, the same kind that have had us wondering if there may be a forthcoming Bieber-helmed footwear brand in the works. And, never one to skirt an opportunity for sweatshirt acrobatics, he wore his gray crewneck askew with one arm in, one arm out—thus freeing up a limb to readily grasp a can of berry-flavored La Croix sparkling water.
Justin’s wife, in this instance, looked elegant and menswear-adjacent in a long, oversized, almond-butter-brown wool coat by The Row—which, by the way, is one of the only two correct types of jackets right now—layered over a bright red New York souvenir sweatshirt and matching red micro shorts. This combination reminds us that when it comes to Hailey Bieber’s personal style formula, all roads generally lead back to the enduring panache of Princess Diana, one of HB’s personal style icons (whom she once emulated in a 2019 French Vogue photoshoot) and the unparalleled champion of pairing structured outerwear with coastal sportswear. Hailey’s accessories, meanwhile, are sweetly Gen Z: fuzzy white socks, buckled Mary Janes, a Nike ball cap, and dark Saint Laurent shades.
As we gear up for another living-and-breathing rotation around the sun (yipee!), it’s useful to look towards madcap dressers like the Biebers as we decide on our own personal clothing preferences for 2024. For all their chaos, their style compasses are set to their own true north.
